Abstract :

Some physical factors such as magnetic field, electric field, He-Ne laser light are used in agriculture as seed conditioning methods. Studies showed that they can cause an increase of seed germination capacity, acceleration and evenness of emergence, yield increase of crops. The influence of these physical factors on the high quality seeds was usually investigated in different studies, while not many works have been concerned with seeds of worse quality. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of alternating magnetic field, alternating electric field and He-Ne laser light treatment on radish seed germination, taking into consideration old seeds. The studies material were 6 radish seed lots of ‘Mila’ cultivar. Its germination capacity was from 78.8% to 97%. Its age was 1-7 years. Because the longevity of radish seed is 6-7 years, the 7-year old seeds were treated as old. It was found out that response of radish seeds to alternating magnetic field, alternating electric field and He-Ne laser light exposure depends on their quality. Stimulation of old radish seeds (with germination capacity about 80%) caused a significant increase of germination capacity, germination at first counting, shortening of the time required for germination of  25% and 50% of the maximum germination (T25,T50) and mean germination time (MGT). High quality radish seeds (with germination capacity above 90%) did not respond positively to the physical factors applied. Treatment of radish seeds with alternating magnetic field, alternating electric field and He-Ne laser light influenced favourably the increase of seedling dry weight.
