Abstract : | The objective of this study was to employ numerical models of Cannabis sative L. seeds obtained through the application of a 3D scanner and image analysis for examining their geometric attributes. Cannabis sative L. seeds stored in a room with a constant temperature of 20oC and air humidity of 60% were used in this study. Seed moisture content was 13%. Individual seeds were photographed in two planes – vertically and from the side. The obtained images of the seeds were used to determine their dimensions. The photographs were taken with a flat Plustek OpticPro ST24 scanner with a resolution of 1200 dpi. The accuracy of the measurements amounted to d = 0.01 mm. Having obtained the seeds’ dimensions based on image analysis, their surface area and volume were calculated using mathematical formulas. Next, using a 3D Nextengine scanner the seeds were scanned. Scan density amounted to 248 dots mm2. Having created a seed model, its surface area and volume were measured, as well as the seed length, width and thickness. Each examined seed was weighted on a digital scale with the accuracy of 0.0001 g. Based on the conducted tests of significance, it can be concluded that the difference between the surface area of the seed determined by means of a 3D scanner and its surface area calculated based on a geometric dependence employed by Gaston et al. (2002), the difference between the seed volume determined on the basis of a 3D model and the seed volume determined on the basis of a geometric dependence also used by Gaston et al. (2002) and the difference between the average seed length determined on the basis of a 3D model and the seed length determined on the basis of a photograph are not statistically significant. A 3D model obtained by means of a scanner can be applied in the analysis of geometric attributes of the seeds. |
