Abstract :

Frost risk assessment was based on data from 27 meteorological stations of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute (IUNG-PIB) and data of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute IMGW-PIB. The level of yields of horticulture and orchard crops was based on data published by the Central Statistical Office (GUS). Frost in May 2011 occurred in the area of all of the Provinces of Poland. Particularly strong frosts were recorded in the territory of the Provinces: Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie. Losses in yield caused by the frosts occurred, including the orchard and horticultural crops. The largest yield losses occurred in the Wielkopolska Province for gooseberries, cherries, plums and pears (yield reduction relative to average long-term yields were above 70%), and for apples, peach, apricot and walnut (these reductions were more than 80%). Slightly lower losses of yield due to frost, but also high, were reported in the Provinces: Opolskie, Śląskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Lubuskie, Łódzkie and Podlaskie.
