Scope of research activities
AGROPHYSICS is a branch of science applying physics to the investigation of properties of materials and the processes involved in the production and processing of agricultural products, especially in relationships between soil-plant-atmosphere and soil-plant-machine-agricultural products, with special focus on the state of the natural environment and the quality of raw materials and food products.

Scope of research activities

Studies on the physical properties of materials and processes significant for the natural environment, sustainable agricultural production and processing of agricultural products, with special attention paid to the quality of raw materials and food products. Measuring methods and computer modelling.
Physics of the environment
Study and monitoring of the physical and physico-chemical processes in the 'soil-plant-atmosphere' system
The physical, chemical and physico-chemical properties of soil and plants and their relations to the course of the mass and energy transport in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Data-bases and systems for the regulation of surface characteristics and hydro- and thermo-physical properties of the soil. The phenomena and processes determining physical soil quality. Relations between physical and biological properties of soil and its oxygenation status. Formation of greenhouse gases in soil and their emission to the atmosphere. Pollution of the agricultural environment. Physical soil conditions influencing root development and plant yield
Physics of plant materials in sustainable agricultural production
Study of the physical properties of plants and agricultural products and processes taking place during vegetation, harvest, transportation, storage and processing
The physical properties of plant and agricultural products. The physical processes significant for harvesting, transportation, storage and the processing of raw materials. The micro-structure of plant materials. The physical methods for identifying damage in agricultural products and the mechanisms of its appearance taking into account external factors and the variations between the different cultivars and varieties. Technological improvements for preventing the unfavourable effects of damage and increasing the quality of raw materials and food products.
Agrophysical metrology
Designing and improvement of physical measuring methods

Methods and equipment for measuring, monitoring and analysing the time and space variability of physical parameters of the soil environment and agricultural materials subjected to agro-technical and technological processing. Works on the standardization of measuring methods.
Computer modelling and simulations
Computer modelling of the processes in the natural environment and food processing
The processes of mass and energy exchange in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum and in agricultural products. Systems for the regulation of the physical, hydro-, thermo-physical and biological properties of the structures studied. Fertilization systems aimed at minimizing the impact of pollution on the environment. The physical characteristics of granular materials. The physical processes taking place in the preparation and processing technologies of agricultural products.
