WP4: Control measures against topsoil degradation due to erosion

Objectives:
- improve links with outstanding centers in EU for sustainable development of areas susceptible to erosion,
- exchange and comparison of methods used to evaluate erosion and to elaborate unified procedures and indices,
- promote modern methods in soil erosion assessment and application of control measures.

Deliverables and milestones for the package:
- capacity building of the Centre within soil erosion,
- creation of Scientific Network with leading institutions in EU,
- distribution of knowledge and experience,
- submission proposals to European FP.

General activities:
- establishment of national network on soil erosion assessment,
- organization of seminar to compare methods applied in different scales to study soil erosion (the output will be given in a publication form),
- organization of Summer school for young researches to bring the methods into general use on the basis of national network (the output will be given in Conference Proceedings),
- short scientific missions to foreign collaborating research units,
- organization of visits of prominent foreign researches in the Institute of Agrophysics.

Examples of activity realized within the WP4:
- assessment of soil erosion balance in the small loess catchment on the basis of detailed soil map derived from profiles description presenting integrated effect of water erosion and tillage translocation (analyzed with GIS),
- evaluation of effectiveness of plant canopy stages in soil erosion by water,
- determination of antecedent soil moisture on runoff generation (laboratory experiments with rainfall simulator and plot studies).
