WP6: Relationship between soil physical characteristics and root and shoot growth and plant water use
WP6: Relationship between soil physical characteristics and root and shoot growth and plant water use

Person responsible in the Centre: Prof. Jerzy Lipiec

Objectives:
  • improve methods of studying root growth and function in relation to soil physical behaviour,
  • strengthen collaboration with foreign collaborating research centres,
  • evaluate relations between spatial distribution of roots and soil physical conditions.
Deliverables and milestones for the package:
  • better understanding on the topic how agriculture can be managed in environmental friendly way,
  • proposal to European FP,
  • introduction and application of modern physical methods into Centre's laboratory,
  • scientific publications from the work financed by the program.

General activities:
  • workshop to compare methods for assessment soil physical characteristic and crop response,
  • visits of foreign scientists in the Institute of Agrophysics PAS,
  • organisation of workshop and training to graduate students,
  • participation of foreign researchers in the project.

Examples of activity realized within the WP6:
  • evaluation of spatial distribution of soil strength and water content as related to machinery traffic,
  • determining root water uptake depending on spatial distribution of soil physical conditions,
  • assessment of the effect of soil macropores on root and shoot growth of plants and water infiltration into the soil.
